1 Minute Advice: Consumers Wary of AI Use for Brand Marketing

Almost 6 in 10 consumers think the use of AI by brand marketers could result in the loss of human touch, and 55 percent can see not being able to speak to a human when interacting with a brand in the future. This is according to a survey of 9,500 working age consumers from the U.S. and seven other countries conducted by Attest, as reported by Marketing Charts.

Additional results from the survey indicated that (1) almost half of respondents did not want to see AI-generated models in ads, and (2) only 18.6 percent said they would be likely to follow a computer-generated influencer online.

According to Marketing Charts reporting on a recent survey by Sprout Social, 78% of social media users surveyed in the US and UK agree that a brand’s social media presence has a larger impact this year than last on whether or not they trust that brand. In addition, an increasing share of consumers say they would pay a premium price for brands they trust.

The two leading social media factors that impact brand trust, report consumers, are (1) the content brands post on social media and (2) how fast brands respond to their audience on social media. Further down on the list in importance is how personalized brand responses are, the content shared about the brand by other consumers, the influencers brands partner with, and how many followers the brand has on social media.

1 Minute Advice: Purchasing Influence of Social Media

Hootsuite recently surveyed more than 6,000 adults ages 18-64 across the US, UK, Canada, and Australia who follow brands on social media and say social media has at least some influence on their purchase decisions. According to Marketing Charts, the report reveals that for 58%, following a brand has a moderate to high impact on their purchase decisions. Moreover, 7 in 10 who follow brands on social media report having explicit plans to purchase from them (soon or in the future).

As such, says Marketing Charts, brands need to be careful not to alienate their followers, and there are certain behaviors that they should avoid. The leading reason why respondents have unfollowed or hid a brand in the past 12 months is due to it posting clickbait (intentionally misleading content), as cited by 76%. That’s followed by posting inauthentic content (68%),  as well as boring content (68%) and repetitive content (68%).

The price of a product or service is obviously a factor in a consumer's purchase decision, but there are other factors that outweigh it, according to a recent survey as reported in Marketing Charts. Almost two-thirds of U.S. consumers (65 percent) say the quality of the brand's product or service is more important than price, but this percentage varies by demographics: Higher for Boomers (77 percent), Gen Xers (69 percent) and Millennials (66 percent), but lower for Gen Zers (41 percent). Convenience outweighs price as a factor in importance 58 percent across all demographics, but again it changes by group: Boomers (66 percent), Gen Xers (57 percent), Millennials (60 percent) and Gen Zers (44 percent).

Audience targeting company GWI recently reported that Baby Boomers are more likely than the Gen Z generation to make purchases online and that "older consumers have more to spend," as reported by Marketing Charts. In surveying 15,450 Baby Boomers (ages 60-64) around the world, along with 58,572 Gen Zers (ages 16-26), GWI finds that almost one-quarter (23%) of the former report having high purchasing power, a rate almost triple that of the younger generation (8%). Additionally, 30% of Baby Boomers say they’re in a high-income group, compared to 21% of Gen Zers.
